The electrical activity that goes through the heart can be recorded by external (skin) electrodes or leads. The electrocardiogram (ECG) registrates this activity via these electrodes which are positioned at different positions of the body. In total 12 'leads' are calculated from the signals of 10 electrodes.
These 10 are: | |||
* ''' | * '''the extremity electrodes:'''
** LA - | ** LA - left arm | ||
** RA - | ** RA - right arm | ||
** N - | ** N - neutral, on the right leg (= electrical ground signal or zero)
** F - | ** F - feet, on the left leg (feet)
It does not matter much whether the electrodes are positioned proximately or distally on the extremities. However proximal and distal electrode position should not be mixed within one recording (eg. one electrode on the left shoulder and one on the right wrist)
* ''' | * '''the chest electrodes:'''
** V1 - | ** V1 - positioned in the 4th intercostal space right of the sternum (breastbone)
** V2 - | ** V2 - positioned in the 4th intercostal space left of the sternum
** V3 - | ** V3 - positioned halfway between V2 and V4
** V4 - | ** V4 - positioned in the 5th intercostal space in the midclavicular line
** V5 - | ** V5 - positioned halfway between V4 and V6
** V6 - | ** V6 - positioned in the axillary linege at the same height as V4
